SMD Opens Subsea Technology Facility at Neptune Energy Park
On Tuesday 14th October, subsea technology and services company SMD hosted the official opening day for SMD Tech Works, their brand new 1,800 sqm North East facility located directly on our Neptune Energy Park site here at Shepherd Offshore.
SMD Tech Works will help lead the way in underwater technology innovation and represents a brilliant £3m investment into the River Tyne region. It is yet another key example of the integral role that the Tyne Corridor plays in the energy and engineering hub, supporting thousands of jobs.
It was great to see the Shepherd Offshore team attending the event and listening in to an excellent talk from Mark Collins and Mike Jones from SMD, as well as the North East Combined Authority Mayor Kim McGuinness and Newcastle City Council Chief Executive Pam Smith.
We can’t wait to work closely with SMD, and we’re proud to directly contribute to such exciting innovation in the subsea industry.
Bruce Shepherd, Chairman, Shepherd Offshore:
“We are delighted to welcome SMD to Neptune Energy Park. Their decision to invest here is a strong endorsement of the River Tyne’s world-class reputation and the opportunities this region offers. At Shepherd Offshore, our focus has always been on creating the infrastructure, skills, and partnerships that enable businesses to thrive. SMD’s presence will not only support job creation and innovation but will also strengthen the North East’s position at the forefront of the offshore and subsea industries. We look forward to working closely with SMD as they continue to grow and succeed on the Tyne.”
Mike Jones, Chairman, SMD:
“SMD Tech Works is a milestone investment for us and the region. This facility reflects our continued growth as we surpass a headcount of 300 and pursue our target of £150m turnover by 2030. Over the years, we have brought 12 world-first technologies to market, and this new space will ensure we remain at the forefront of subsea innovation.
“Importantly, it also strengthens our connection to the North East community, helping us create valuable career opportunities for local people, support skills development, and contribute to the clean energy supply chain.”
